How to use

  • Be a disciple yourself.

Tend to your relationship with Christ and to your connection to the church. Your biggest gift to your friend is your own authentic continued growth in Christ. Open yourself to learning from your friend, from the material, and most of all from the Holy Spirit.

  • Be a friend.

The role of the hamsafar is not a teacher or a pastor. You’re not leading a class. You are a co-journeyer, a friend who humbly shares life, time, and experience with another believer over roughly 100 days.

  • 1-1.

Safar is not for a group setting. The 30 Steps are meant to be shared one-to-one. It is about building a relationship of trust where you can invest in another believer’s life to help them learn to walk with Christ.

  • Listen.

Aim to speak less than 50% of the time. Listen carefully to their stories. Ask questions. Maintain confidentiality, build trust that allows the discussion to go deep.

  • Follow the steps.

Safar has been carefully designed. Each step is focused around putting a main idea into practice, reinforced with questions, Scripture exploration, exercises and prayer. Take time to review the step before each meeting so that the conversation can flow.

  • Get Practical.

Particularly focus on ”Practice together now.” Make space for your friend to discover and experience rather than simply ’be told.’  Doing this activity together is the key to growth.

  • Safar is not a class.

Meet about twice a week to go through the steps. Remember to keep the atmosphere informal – have a drink or a meal together. Meet for a fun activity or an errand and then go through a step.

  • Be vulnerable.

Share from your own life, not only the good examples but also your struggles. Be real about the joys and sorrows of the journey. Authentic relationship will have the biggest impact.

  • Say, ”I don’t know.”

No need to have all the answers. Model humility and a teachable heart by seeking wisdom from others. Besides, more than answers, this fellow believer needs relationship.

  • Pray.

Your prayer is powerful. Commit to praying regularly for your friend. Will you pray for them daily for 100 days?
